John Elway was born in Port Angeles, Wash. on June 28, 1960. He is well-known and respected as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. He set many records during his college football days at Stanford. Yet, he was also a standout baseball player who gained a lot of attention from Major League Baseball (MLB). The Kansas City Royals wanted to draft him in 1979, but Elway chose Stanford football instead. He was again a top recruit for MLB in 1981 when the New York Yankees drafted him. Though he was drafted by the NFL two years later as the first overall pick in the draft. His love for football prevailed, but he was unhappy with the franchise who selected him — the Baltimore Colts. Lucky for the NFL, since Elway threatened to leave football for baseball, the Colts agreed to trade Elway to the Broncos. It was in Denver where Elway impressed fans and set more records for 16 years.
His tenure in Denver didn’t end at retirement. Since 2011, Elway has served as the Executive Vice President of Football Operations & GM for the Denver Broncos. General Manager was added to his title in 2014, shortly after the Broncos made their first Super Bowl appearance since Elway quarterbacked the team. They lost that year but returned to the Super Bowl — victorious — two years later.
John is incredibly active in the Denver community, sitting on numerous advisory boards. He also owns several automobile dealerships in Colorado, the website Vroom.com, co-owns four Elway's Restaurants in Colorado, and is the founder of wine label SevenWines. John was inducted into Canton, Ohio’s Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.
